For many wave technology companies, the ultimate goal is to replicate ocean waves. While this is a great driver to bring in experienced customers, surf-anchored developments also benefit from avoiding the challenges of the ocean. Creating controlled environments allows surfers of all experience levels and abilities to partake in the sport. A focus on accessibility is not only a morally responsible decision, but it’s also good for business and can bring in more guests.
Surf Park Central spoke with ADG/EpicSurf, a wave creator focused on accessibility (and winner of this year’s People’s Choice Surf Park Award) about creating waves for all. The company’s international sales and marketing manager, Julie Kline, shared why developers should focus on accessibility.
Surf Park Central: Why is EpicSurf focused on creating more accessibility with its wave technology?
Juline Kline: Aquatic Development Group (ADG) has been a leader in designing, engineering, manufacturing, and building wave systems for over 50 years. From recreational wave pools in water parks to high-performance applications like the first purpose-built surf pool in the U.S. in the 1980s, and even specialty wave systems for rescue training, ADG has always held fast to core values: creativity, durability, reliability, innovation, and, above all, a safe and fun experience for everyone. These principles have been the foundation of ADG’s success and remain central to all our projects and products.
Accessibility is a guiding priority at ADG, driving us to design equipment and attractions that everyone can enjoy. With EpicSurf, this commitment to inclusivity was integral from the start. Leveraging our experience building over 130 sheet waves across North America, we set out to create a deeper, more versatile wave that allows for real surfing, training, and carving. Our goal was to develop a wave that anyone, regardless of skill level or physical ability, could access and enjoy. EpicSurf’s design reflects this vision, offering an inclusive surf experience that brings the thrill and freedom of surfing to all.
Surf Park Central: What about EpicSurf’s design makes it more accessible?
Kline: EpicSurf’s design incorporates several features that make it a truly accessible surf experience. Key elements include a soft, safe landing area due to the real water depth and the soothing sound of natural waves crashing. EpicSurf’s retractable training bars help riders start from a standing position, making it easier for beginners and riders of all abilities to enjoy. Additionally, the drain-dry safety system offers an immediate stop function, enhancing safety and comfort, while variable pump flow allows trainers to stand directly in the wave to support riders. With rapid adjustability, EpicSurf can quickly modify wave heights from 2 to 5 feet at the touch of a button. In 2022, EpicSurf became the only surf technology certified as an official Certified Autism Resource by the International Board of Credentialing & Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES). This designation reflects a comprehensive analysis based on riders from diverse backgrounds, including individuals aged 5 to 75, riders with cerebral palsy, autism, veterans, visually impaired participants, and paraplegic surfers. Additionally, our recent partnership with Aqua Creek further enhances our ability to meet the needs of all riders, evolving EpicSurf’s design to make surfing accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
Surf Park Central: Can you tell me more about the partnership with Aqua Creek and what they’re offering?
Kline: Aqua Creek Products is an industry leader in high-quality aquatic access and therapy equipment, known for its ADA-compliant pool and spa lifts that provide versatile access solutions for both commercial and residential settings. As the only company offering multiple UL Certified lifts, Aqua Creek brings unparalleled expertise to the partnership. Together with Aqua Creek, we’re developing the world’s first lift system specifically designed for a standing surf wave, marking a significant step forward in accessibility for the industry. This innovative lift will provide a comfortable, secure way for riders with limited mobility to access the wave, allowing them to be smoothly hoisted into position and maintain a steady placement on the wave depending on their individual needs. This ensures a safe and enjoyable surf experience without the concern of falls or instability. The partnership was unveiled at this year’s Surf Park Summit, and we are already progressing with R&D on the lift’s design, aiming to make this accessible surfing solution available in surf parks worldwide.
Surf Park Central: How does a more accessible wave technology benefit a surf park developer or operator?
Kline: Around 1.3 billion people worldwide, or roughly 16% of the global population, experience significant disabilities. In the U.S. alone, over 70 million adults—about one in four—reported having a disability in 2022. For surf park developers and operators, creating an inclusive wave experience is essential not only for moral and social reasons but also as a smart business strategy. Inclusive wave technology sends a powerful message: everyone deserves equal access to recreational spaces, and no one should face unnecessary barriers to enjoyment and connection. By offering a wave technology that accommodates people of all abilities, operators can welcome a broader audience, fostering a sense of belonging and respect within the community. An accessible surf experience also supports long-term profitability by tapping into a larger market and ensuring no potential visitors are excluded. Inclusivity promotes equity and positions the park as a forward-thinking, compassionate destination where everyone can enjoy the thrill of surfing, creating lasting connections and setting a standard for inclusivity in recreational spaces.
Surf Park Central: What EpicSurf projects are in the works?
Kline: We are busy here at EpicSurf working with several clients in all different phases of project stages, as well as areas of the world.
