Atlantic Park Surf Lagoon Marks Major Milestone ahead of Mid-Summer Opening

Press Release from Atlantic Park:

The 2.67-acre surf lagoon at Atlantic Park is now filled, marking a major milestone ahead of its long-anticipated opening later this summer in the heart of the Virginia Beach oceanfront.

When it opens to the public later this summer, Atlantic Park Surf will be the first Wavegarden Cove Surf Lagoon in North America, offering an unparalleled surfing experience.

“Centrally located and integrated within an urban environment adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean, Atlantic Park is unlike any other surf park in the world,” said Blake Hess, COO of surf park operator Beach Street. “With the 46-module Cove making waves, Atlantic Park Surf offers unlimited profiles to cater to all levels.”

Powered by Wavegarden Cove, the most energy-efficient wave-generation technology in the world, the system can generate up to 1,000 waves per hour and more than 20 types of waves, ranging from one to seven feet in height and tailored to beginners, intermediate, advanced and expert surfers.

“Atlantic Park in Virginia Beach is super important to us, as it’s the first Wavegarden Cove in the U.S.,” said Fernando Odriozola, Wavegarden’s Chief Commercial Officer and Co-Founder. “More importantly, it illustrates how our wave pools can transform the entire community landscape, creating a sports and entertainment hub that brings people together and enhances business, lifestyle and tourism. We commend our development partners, city officials and supporters for their foresight in making this dream a reality.”

The filling of the Atlantic Park Surf lagoon is the first major milestone in a meticulous pre-opening process that includes a wet commissioning and wave programming period overseen by Wavegarden. This includes fine-tuning of the lagoon’s impressive wave modules that make it possible to tailor waves for seasoned and novice surfers alike.

The lagoon’s surrounding “beach” provides a premium beach-club environment – with lounge chairs, cabanas and food-and-beverage options – offering surfers a place to relax and enjoy before or after their session. Non-surfers can purchase a daily beach pass to enjoy these premium beach-club amenities while watching the surf.

Members of the Atlantic Park Surf Club and those who purchased a surf pass during the lagoon’s pre-sale period earlier this year will receive priority access to lagoon bookings. The booking calendar will open to the general public later this month at AtlanticParkSurf.com.

Atlantic Park Surf’s 55-minute sessions will be available year-round, with hours varying seasonally. Each surfer will have the chance to catch an average of 12 waves per session; the capacity for each session ranges from 20 to 40, depending on the wave profile. Surfing rates range from $91 to $161 per session, depending on the wave profile and season. A limited Atlantic Park Surf Club membership is also available.

The surf lagoon is the centerpiece of the $350-million Atlantic Park development, which, in addition to surfing, offers live entertainment, shopping, dining, living and boutique lodging spanning more than 10 acres.

Stewarded by Virginia Beach native and global superstar Pharrell Williams, Atlantic Park harnesses the energy of the city’s potential, distinct culture and legacy as the birthplace of East Coast surfing.

Additional components of Atlantic Park, which include the recently opened The Dome will continue opening into the fall. All updates will be announced at AtlanticParkVB.com and on Instagram (@atlanticparkvb).

Atlantic Park is a public-private partnership among the City of Virginia Beach, the Virginia Beach Development Authority, Venture Realty Group, Pharrell Williams, W.M. Jordan Company, Bishard Development and Priority Title/H20 Investments. In partnership, OVG 360 and Live Nation, both global leaders in live entertainment, operate and program The Dome.
