Guest post from Cloward H20:
It’s good to be in business – it’s great to be in business doing what you enjoy. For those at Cloward H2O, what’s not to love about dreaming up the most fabulous water and aquatics features in the world and seeing those dreams become reality.
Based in Lindon, Utah, Cloward H2O is a world-renowned team of consulting engineers and designers, specializing in unique and innovative Water Features, swimming pools, Water Parks, Themepark Attractions, in-land Surf, Whitewater, and aquarium/aquatic life support systems.
With 45 years of this specialized experience ranging from engineering the largest resorts and marine facilities in the world, to specialty fountains, private residential pools, and water park facilities; Cloward H2O’s ability to assemble a team of experienced professionals and to channel its collective skills for work on the structural, civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering elements related to the design and construction of such projects is unsurpassed in the industry.
“We don’t focus on just a swimming pool, or just a fountain, or just the life support system. Most of our competition would be focusing exclusively on one of those specific areas,” says Allen Clawson, Principal and Managing Partner with the Firm. “What we do is unique in that that we offer our services for all types of recreational water and aquatic life support whether water park attractions, snorkel lagoons, surf parks, complex systems of water treatment for an endangered species in an aquarium, or a relatively simple resort swimming pool. The broad scope of our services – that is what is pretty unique.”
Cloward H2O typically goes to work as a consultant to the project’s building or landscape architect, or directly through the owner, and works to stay involved with a project throughout the development and construction process. A hands-on, active philosophy gives Cloward H2O the ability to closely monitor a project’s development, to fine-tune plans when necessary, and to actively work with the general contractor and other trades to maintain design intent.
“Surf Parks are pretty spectacular developments,” says Corry Cloward, President of Cloward H2O. “It’s part of the whole team effort. The owner’s core vision, number one, is to blow away the guest. That’s what the client was going for, doing everything in a spectacular way. It’s over the top. Our response was: “If you can dream it, we can build it.””
Of course, the list of projects undertaken by Cloward H2O isn’t limited to those that are grand in scope and budget. Even the smaller jobs require Cloward H2O engineers and designers to think outside of the proverbial box, or outside of the indoor fishpond, if you will. “Besides the truly iconic properties that everyone recognizes, such as Atlantis or Deep Dive Dubai, we are also able to put our expertise to work on much more down to earth projects such hotel amenity pools or fountains,” says Clawson. “We design a large number of amenity pools for hospitality, resort and condominium developments, working closely with the architect or landscape architect to provide the unique designs they are looking for to set their property apart.” The pools may be a relatively small part of the overall project but “what is it that is on the brochure, web site and all the Instagram photos – always the pool.”
Clawson says that Cloward H2O typically maintains more than five dozen active projects at any one time, spanning the globe from North America to the Middle East, the Caribbean to Asia and the Pacific Islands, Central and South America to Africa and Europe. “Each project we undertake pushes the company in its creativity and ingenuity, and the developments we’re involved with are made stronger.”
Surf Parks are rapidly gaining recognition, acceptance, and momentum around the world. The possibility of consistent recreational surfing as well as focused training along with national and international surfing competitions (including the recent move by the IOA putting surfing on the ticket for the Summer Games…) has captured keen interest from both enthusiasts and investors. Cloward H2O has tackled engineering for surf venues, both modern and classic (starting with Sun City in 1987) along with numerous other large, innovative, and complex aquatic venues. No other aquatic engineering firm can match our experience or proficiency in regard to the unique requirements involved in developing a Surf Park Venue. Cloward H2O has been proactively involved in the evolving regulatory status affecting Surf Parks serving on joint committees with ASTM, NSF, CMAHC and others as the industry works to get a handle on the complexities involved in a growing sector of our industry.
