Watch: A Skydiver Parachutes Into a Surf Park and Catches a Wave

A new viral video showcases the awesomeness of surf parks. The soon-to-open surf park in Abu Dhabi is front and center in the clip that captures a skydiver parachuting into a surf park and catching a wave.

Red Bull shared the clip of skydiver Sebastián Álvarez, who is also a surfer. In the video you see Álvarez plummeting toward Surf Abu Dhabi with a surfboard strapped to his feet.

Watch the video:

According to Red Bull, the surfboard has a special modification to survive the jump from around 12,000 feet.  Álvarez jumped from a helicopter over the Hudayriyat Island.

After a long ride down, he opens his parachute and unclips right after hitting the water. Meanwhile, a wave-powered by the Kelly Slater Wave Company is already rolling. Álvarez manages to catch the wave and ride right in front of a barrel.

Álvarez says he was inspired by nature for jumping and watching animals like pelicans.

“I wanted to recreate the feeling of birds gliding over waves, and thanks to the perfect setting at Surf Abu Dhabi, I was able to make it a reality,” says Álvarez.

The WSL announced earlier this month plans to host multiple events at the new surf-anchored destination. The venue is set to host the third stop on the 2024 WSL Longboard Tour and will host the 2025 Championship Tour (CT).
