Press Release from the International Surf Therapy Organization:
Many cultures have concepts that are similar to “Aloha,” such as “Ubuntu” in Africa or “Bula” in Fiji. The Aloha Spirit lives in random acts of kindness. It manifests itself across a broad spectrum of selfless acts, from putting one’s life at risk; to sharing a smile in the lineup or a kind word with a stranger. Aloha is sharing waves. It’s being the surf photographer instead of the surfer (for a day), sharing knowledge, protecting planet earth, the leaders at beach cleanups, and the most stoked surfer you know. The Aloha Spirit thrives with Nonprofit (NGO) Founders, Staff, Volunteers, and Participants. The Aloha Spirit is everywhere!
- The winner of the Aloha Award receives a one-week, all-expenses-paid trip (i.e., flights and accommodation) to Fiji’s premier water sports resort, Namotu Island, and a donation of $10,000 to a charity or charitable endeavor of their choice.
- The runner-up receives a charitable donation of $5,000 in their name.
- Each of the three remaining finalists receives a charitable donation of $2,500 in their name.
