The Boot is the largest boat show in the world, held in Düsseldorf. It brings in more than 247,000 visitors from more than 94 countries. In an effort to bring in more young visitors the organizers have included different events, but none as exciting and popular as the Wave-Masters. A stationary wave surf contest held on “The Wave,” which is a standing wave technology developed by Citywave®.
Last year was the first season for The Boot event, and it brought in big names from the European river surfing world. They ran the second edition of the event last weekend and it showed even more great participants than the first. Starting the weekend from January 20th- 21st, was SUP Wave Masters 2018 which hosted the likes of Robby Naish, of Naish Surfing from Hawaii, as well as defending champion Airton Cozzolino. Other stars of the sport such as reigning world champ Casper Steinfath and Zane Schweitzer all participated in shows for the occasion.
The second weekend (January 27th-28th) had the best European river surfers gathered at the Citywave® machine. They battled for the Wave-Masters title of 2018 and it was Janina Zeitler from Munich, who came out on top for the second year in a row.
Alexis Daniel, the leader of the Seven Islands Surf Club of Perros-Guirec participated in the SUP Wave masters event on the first weekend. Alexis is the European champion of Paddle Surfing and this was his first go on The Wave.
”It’s pretty special, the event was as friendly as it was difficult. Between local surfers accustomed to practicing this wave and us, international totally newcomers. Thanks to our technique, we still managed to improve our level.” Said Alexis, he also included that “I’ll be back.” Alexis ended up taking a fish place finish behind two Hawaiians who beat out two German stars of the sport.
The €5,000 cash purse was distributed amongst all surfers that competed in the Wave-Masters event. The Surfers were able to train on the wave during the Friday before the competition at The Boot.
“The Wave” created by Citywave® is a deepwater river wave. Surfers are able to ride standard surfboards that they would use in the ocean, fins and all. If you’re not familiar with Citywave check them out here http://citywave.de
